Welcome to Cheap Malta
Welcome to Cheap Malta.net our niche travel site blog that has been designed to help travellers get the best out of their visit to this wonderfully sunny and friendly island.
Situated in the Mediterranean Sea just off the coast of southern Sicily, the Maltese Islands are just made for wonderful holidays. Being compact they provide a fascinating blend of history, holidays and very friendly small-island hospitality. The climate is the best in southern Europe and when you couple this with some 6,500 years of history it is not hard to see why more than 1 million tourists flock to the islands each year.
In spite of its proximity to Italy and its colonial British past, Malta is totally independent with many quirky charms all of its own – including its own language of Malti which is Phoenician-based with Arab modifications and later English and Italian influences. It is complex and not the easiest language to speak or understand. However, you will be pleased to learn that English is very widely spoken throughout the islands.
As a potential new visitor you may be wondering whether there are sufficient things to do in Malta. Don’t worry. You will be spoilt for choice.
If sightseeing is your passion then you will not be disappointed. History beckons at every turn and in many of the towns and villages. There are a wealth of churches, palaces and fortifications that have survived over the centuries all with enticing stories to unfold.
Right near the top of every visitors sightseeing list is the majestic fortified capital of Valletta and its world renowned Grand Harbour. In this area, coupled with those of Sliema, St Julian’s and the historical Three Cities, we find the urban centre of the island and home to some 90% of the population. Mdina, a medieval walled city of narrow streets and alleyways, is also a must see destination as is Marsaxlokk, a lovely fishing harbour packed with luzzu boats. Gozo, the sister island to Malta, has much to offer and should not be missed.
For sports enthusiasts there is a wealth of activities to keep you occupied whether on the land or the sea. Golf, tenpin bowling, tennis, squash, fitness centres and rock climbing are all available as are mountain biking holidays. For water sports fans you really are spoilt for choice with sailing, water skiing, canoeing, windsurfing, fishing and various types of boat trips available in abundance.
The sea around the Maltese islands is as clear and clean as it gets anywhere in the Mediterranean and for this reason it is a Mecca for scuba divers with some of the best diving to be found anywhere in the world. Scuba diving is good all-year round with visibility between 6m
to 20m and the popularity of diving in Malta can be attributed to its variety of underwater experiences including scenic swim-through tunnels, a superb range of historical wrecks (including many from WWII) interesting and varied marine life and stunning reefs. Scuba divers visiting Malta will not be disappointed and as divers ourselves here at Cheap Malta we can vouch for the diving quality.
Malta has a fantastic choice of accommodation available to satisfy all requirements and budgets. There are cheap Malta hotels as well as deluxe hotels along with no-frills guesthouses.
