Valletta: The Epitome of Maltese History and Culture

Perched upon the Sciberras Peninsula, on the North Eastern Coast of Malta, the capital city Valetta opens a world of rich history and fascinating culture. The Sciberra Peninsula is wrapped by the coastlines of two economically vital harbors, the Marsamxett and the Grand.

Valetta, also known as ‘The Fortress City’ is a cross between a fortress rising from the sea, and an architectural Xanadu. The city is designated as a world heritage site, displaying timeless art collections, commanding cathedrals and all settled on a beautiful Mediterranean Island. Valletta hosts a large number of cultural events throughout the year including superb theatre and opera.

This hard working and cosmopolitan city is the centre of administration and commerce for Malta, all while maintaining the quaintness of narrow streets and cobbled alleyways. Every corner of the city has another secret to tell about Valletta’s fascinating history.

Just outside the city walls stands Triton Fountain, a beautiful yet functional landmark. City Gate marks the entrance to the city of Valletta, passing through ornately carved archways and beyond the city walls. The gate was reconstructed in 1964 for a total of four times since its first construction.

Two main squares offer a unique dining and strolling experience in the evenings: Great Siege Square and Queens Square are lined with shops, entertainment and fabulous eateries.

Valletta has played a part in several great wars throughout history. Fort St Elmo-War Museum is the war museum mainly highlighting the World War II. Auberge de Castille is a commanding building situated on the South Street. Other spectacular sites to visit in Valletta are Siege Bell, Lower and Upper Barrakka Gardens, Noon-day Gun, Gun Saluting Battery and Hastings Gardens. For a breathtaking view of Grand Harbor visit Barrakka Gardens.

For a Palace without comparison on the Island of Malta, visit Grand Master’s Palace and Armories, where you can view the armory museum exhibiting the armor and weapons of the Knights of St. John. Additionally, St John’s Co-Cathedral is a prime display of baroque architecture, which is located behind the Victory Square. The Cathedral is packed with famous works of art such as Caravaggio’s “Beheading of St. John the Baptist”. Our Lady Mount Carmel Church is giant dome shaped church nestled amongst the narrow Valletta streets.

Valletta is a perfectly balanced mix of ancient baroque and modern day infrastructure which provides the city with a functional economic stronghold and a timeless Mediterranean beauty.
