Gozo: An Unexploited yet Bountiful Island

Gozo is the second largest island of Malta. Gozo and Malta are demarcated by a stretch of 5 km of sea channel. Gozo is known for its more serene rural atmosphere unlike the hustle and bustle of Malta. The population count of this island is 30,000. People here are mainly indulged in agriculture, fishing and small scale trades. 14km long and 7km wide this island offers wide range of scenic topography.

Gozo means Joy. The place beholds mystic colors of rich culture and history enveloped together with pleasant surroundings. Gozo has to offer spectacular beaches, world heritage sites, lovely walking trails, historic museums, traditional Maltese food and unmatched diving experience. The life here seems to be unaffected by any modernization and retains its simplicity for ages. The Goziton towns are located around the island’s main hub, a central church.

Some of the Goziton towns known for their tourism are Fontana, Gharb, Ghasri, Ghajnsielem, Santa Lucija and Kecern. Fontana is known for its fresh water supply from a blessed spring originating at the bottom of the road. Ghjnsielem is famous for its old chapel of Saint Cecilia. The town also offers exuberant channel views. Gharb another Gozo town is known for its magnificent Ta’ Pinu church. A museum is also located within the church. It exhibits detailed architecture, one of the best in Gozo.  Along with churches Gozo is also famous for Ggantija Temples. These located is Xaghra are the World Heritage Site. Also worth visiting is the 180 meters high ancient lighthouse located on the Gordon hill of Gahsri town. Its beam is visible from 50 km distance.

Gozo is blessed with plenty of beaches. Ir- Ramla Il- Hamra is the most popular and natural beach of Gozo. The water here is very deep. The place is ideal to enjoy slow boating crisscrossing the natural gigantic cliff tunnels. San Blas beach is known for its exceptional red sand. Dahlet Qorrot beach is popular among the fishermen. Small fishing boats sprawling along the beach during summer spreads its own charm. Hondoq ir-Rummien is more common among the locals. The beach provides excellent sunbathing and diving conditions. Xlendi is Gozo’s major beach resort. The place is full of exotic reefs and rocky cliffs. Swimming, snorkeling and paddling can be enjoyed to the most here. There are many more beaches in Gozo, each known for their diversity such as sparkling blue water, majestic cliffs, topography etc.

There are many hotels and apartments available all across the Gozo Island. Though the island is not exploited to its full potential but there are all kinds of star and non star hotels scattered everywhere.

Gozo can be reached easily from Malta by using regular ferry, bus or taxi service. It does not take more than 25 minutes to reach Gozo from Malta by ferry.
